Classroom Activities: What We Study in 2nd Grade
•Morning Meeting—We address various math and language concepts including calendar and weather activities, math review skills, word of the day, and listening and speaking skills.
•Reading Workshop (reading, phonics/spelling)—We utilize the Wonders in Reading Curriculum, Guided Reading (reading based at the child's level), Independent Reading and Journaling, Strategy Mini-Lessons, Reading Center Activities, Poetry Notebooks, Word Work Activities, and the SpellingCity website.
•Math—We utilize the Eureka Curriculum, Interactive Notebooks (Problem Solving and Mathematical Reasoning), Math Center Activities, and the IXL Math website.
•Writing Workshop and Grammar—We focus on a variety of grammar concepts throughout the year. We also focus on three styles of writing (Narrative, Opinion, Informative). Activities will include Mini-Lessons, Interactive Notebooks/Grammar Practice, Interactive/Group Writing, Independent Portfolio Writing, and Conferencing.
•Science—Our curriculum will focus on a combination of hands-on investigation activities and the study of Life, Earth, and Physical Science units. Activities include Exploratory Mini-Labs, Class/Individual Reading Assignments, Journaling, and Small-Group/Individual Projects.
•Social Studies–Our curriculum will focus on Neighborhoods and Communities. Activities will include Class/Individual Reading Assignments, Journaling, and Small-Group/Individual Projects.
•Specials Classes—Students will attend P.E., Music, and Computer classes twice each week. Students will also visit the Library each week and receive Counseling classes every other week.
